$12.5 Million Pavement Project Starts on State Route 33 in Ventura County

VENTURA — This month, the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) is starting a $12.5 million project to repair and replace pavement and make other improvements on State Route 33 (Ojai Freeway) in and near the city of Ventura.

This week, crews will work at night to place temporary concrete barriers (“K-rail”) along the freeway at bridges in preparation for upgrading guard rails. In the coming months, crews will replace and repair asphalt and concrete pavement, repair bridges and overlay new asphalt. The project involves a distance of more than six miles – totaling more than 24 lane miles – on Route 33 between U.S. Highway 101 in Ventura and Parkview Drive in the community of Casitas Springs.

The project is expected to be completed by summer 2019, depending on the weather. Much of the work will be done at night. Crews will be scheduled to reduce inconvenience to the traveling public during peak travel hours.Detours will be provided when ramps or connectors are closed for the project. At times, a full freeway closure in either direction may occur at night, with detours provided.

Drivers are advised to allow extra travel time and watch for signs in the construction zone regarding lane and ramp closures. Traffic fines are doubled in construction zones.C.A. Rasmussen Inc. of Valencia is contractor on the $12.5 million contract, paid for by state funds.

Updates will be provided by Caltrans online at www.dot.ca.gov/d7 and on Twitter @CaltransDist7. Caltrans reminds drivers to “Slow for the Cone Zone” and “Be Work Zone Alert.”
