OJAI, CA (January 12, 2023) The Ojai City Council has voted to extend the Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU)/Second Unit Compliance Program application deadline by two years. The City of Ojai will now accept applications through March 8, 2025. The purpose of the extension is to continue spreading awareness of the program and increasing the number of ADUs and second units in the city. This program also provides amnesty to owners of unpermitted ADUs, allowing them to bring units into compliance without penalty fees.
Residents can access the application online or pick-up a copy from Ojai City Hall, and submit a completed copy to the City’s Community Development Department.
“The City of Ojai recognizes the importance of having affordable housing in our community,” said Ojai City Manager James Vega. “The success of this program is a significant component to increasing available housing in our city, and we encourage individuals with eligible units to apply.”
Since the program’s implementation in 2013, the City has legalized 90 units, with four additional applications currently under review. 16 of those units were legalized in the past two years.
This City developed this program as a proactive, low-cost approach to addressing the lack of affordable housing in Ojai. Since its inception, the Ojai City Council has voted to extend the deadline five times. The program is also included in the city’s Housing Element, which establishes a goal necessary to meet the state-imposed Regional Housing Needs Allocation (RHNA).
